Saying "I feel myself to be the most unhappy and wretched creature in the world," quoting from Goethe's "Gretchen am Spinnrade:" "Meine Ruh ist hin, mein Herz ist schwer," expressing despondency over his health, bemoaning his loss of happiness and hope, the pain of love and friendship, saying that the opera by Kupelwieser's brother has been declared unusable, that he has written two string quartets [D. 804 and 810] and an octet [D. 803], that Beethoven is to give a concert with a new symphony [the Ninth], three movements from a Mass [the Missa Solemnis], and a new overture [Consecration of the House], mentioning Smirsch, Schwind, Leidesdorf, [Georg Abraham Schneider's] opera Die Verschworenen, etc.
